WHAT'S HAPPENING

Creating a seamless transition from high school to college to the world of work

The Education Foundation’s P-20 Council and The South Carolina Course Alignment Project (SC CAP) have partnered to recruit secondary and postsecondary instructors to participate in aligning Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) coursework in our region.

The project focuses on aligning courses taken by high school juniors and seniors with courses taken in the freshman year at the state’s two and four year colleges and universities. By pairing instructors who teach similar subjects at the secondary and postsecondary levels, the project helps to ensure a seamless transition from high school to higher education and the world of work.

The SC CAP is a statewide initiative sponsored by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education along with two state partners: the S.C. Department of Education and the S.C. Technical College System. The nationally-recognized education policy group, the Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC), is facilitating the project. Sixteen educators from the Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester County school districts, The Citadel, College of Charleston, and Trident Technical College will participate in the project during the 2011-2012 academic year.

This year’s newly recruited faculty members will join past participants across South Carolina who are committed to ensuring South Carolina students are prepared to succeed in their freshman college courses. EPIC has produced an informational video that vividly illustrates the project’s benefit to our students; to see this video or to learn more about the S.C. Course Alignment Project go to http://www.epiconline.org/south_carolina. As a next step, the P-20 Council plans a summer symposium on aligning school and college curriculum with the requirements of the work world.

Leadership Charleston Education Month

March is education month for the Leadership Charleston class of 2011. Each year the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce offers the 10-month program for professionals to give them an intensive and up-close look at various issues impacting our region. Leadership Charleston meets monthly from September until June; each session focuses on fundamental leadership principles while examining leadership roles in political, social and economic affairs. The program also features prominent and stimulating presenters and panelists who encourage discussion and participation. The program is meant to strengthen leadership skills, provide greater knowledge of the region and its leaders, and position participants to bring about positive change in our community.

On March 17 the group will meet for an all-day session on education in the tri-county region. Participants will listen to a panel discussion in which the superintendents of the Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester County School Districts will provide insight into the demands and challenges educators face on a daily basis. The class will also visit area high schools to get a first-hand understanding of how high school principals and educators are using career and technology education to strengthen students’ preparedness for the world of work. Whether students plan to attend two or four year colleges or enter the workforce right after graduating from high school, career and technology courses and programs enhance their foundation for success.

In addition, participants will learn about a community in Tennessee that has adopted a unique and progressive model for educating students. The group will be encouraged to think innovatively about how the business community can engage with our students, who are the future backbone of our community. Leadership Charleston will gain an understanding of the realities, opportunities, and challenges of education in our region, as well as solutions and alternative approaches for addressing them.
