Angie Rylands has been chosen to fill a newly-created staff position as Regional STEM Coordinator for The Education Foundation. Angie will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with STEM related businesses (small and large) to participate as partners with priority career academies. As Regional STEM Coordinator she will serve as staff liaison to the P-20 Council and Master Plan Task Force as well as to the Citadel STEM Center of Excellence. She will identify externship opportunities, enlist business partners for institutes hosted by the STEM Center, coordinate with the school districts’ professional development programs, work with the Foundation’s ROI committee to gather appropriate data on STEM initiatives and professional development programs and compose reports regarding progress toward benchmarks.

Angie brings a strong mix of business experience and education to the position and is enthusiastic about working to advance career academies by managing this project, which focuses on professional development externships and pedagogy for the region’s educators in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.

WISE Class Learns About Hospitality and Tourism

High Cotton of Maverick Southern Kitchens hosted the Workplace InStitute for Educators-WISE Hospitality and Tourism session in January. The class met and interacted with experts in various fields of the industry to learn how they got to where they are today as well as how to prepare students for successful entry into the field of hospitality and tourism.

The class had the opportunity to experience the Charleston cuisine and hospitality as well as interview employees during their “business lunch” hosted by downtown restaurants. The hospitality of the business community did not end there—16 downtown businesses were shadow site hosts for educators in the afternoon allowing them to observe and participate in activities with employees and learn more about job opportunities they can convey to their students. Many thanks to the representatives of the hospitality and tourism industry for making it such a beneficial session for the WISE class!

NCDA Poetry and Poster Contest Winners Announced

Four James Island Elementary School first graders were announced as state winners for the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Poetry and Poster Contest in January by the S.C. Department of Education Office of Career and Technology Education.

The NCDA sponsors an annual Poetry and Poster contest to support their annual celebration of National Career Development Month in November. Contest winners are showcased at the annual NCDA conference in July after having gone through a state contest first.

This year’s NCDA Poetry and Poster contest theme was “Celebrating My Career Dreams.” The four state winners were: Savannah Graham, Isabelle McMurray, Cameron Smith and Paisley Stewart. Each winner will receive a certificate from the S.C. Department of Education Office of Career and Technology Education and are nominated to be a national contest winner.

“The NCDA Poetry and Poster Contest spreads career awareness across the state. Students at all grade levels are encouraged to explore all the possibilities and express their dream careers through art! The Trident region is excited and proud to have four state winners from James Island Elementary School going to the national competition,” said Suzi Raiford, Programs Director and Regional Career Specialist of the The Education Foundation.

The National Career Development Association promotes professional and career development by presenting its current 4,200 members opportunities to deliver career services to various groups in diverse locations. For more information about the NCDA please visit www.ncda.org.

Calling All Young Scientists

Alcoa’s Mt. Holly plant encourages aspiring young scientists across the Lowcountry to apply for the American Museum of Natural History’s (AMNH) Young Naturalist Awards. This exceptional program, supported through the Alcoa Foundation, was created to promote active participation in the sciences and stimulate youth to explore science careers.

For 14 years, the Young Naturalist Awards have encouraged middle and high school students in grades 7 to 12 across the US and Canada to independently explore the natural world and pursue in-depth scientific research in the areas of biology, Earth science, ecology and astronomy. Contestants form hypotheses, conduct research, plan experiments, gather data, and report their findings in an essay.

In the last three years, Alcoa Foundation has invested $21.5 million to support education and workforce readiness across the communities where Alcoa operates, with a particular focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.

The Alcoa Foundation will help present awards to the 12 winners at a ceremony at the AMNH in New York City. Winners also receive a scholarship and a paid trip to the ceremony, where they meet scientists and take a behind-the scenes tour of the Museum. In addition, winning contestants will have their essays featured on the Museum’s website. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2011.

Berkeley County School Counselors Make History

Congratulations to the following Berkeley County School Counselors! Their School Counseling Programs have earned the School Counseling Profession's highest team award: the RAMP (Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program) designation:
College Park Elementary School
Daniel Island School
Hanahan Elementary School
Hanahan High School

The Counseling Teams at these schools completed a rigorous evaluation process and are now being recognized among the top School Counseling programs in the country. Not only are these schools the first in the Lowcountry to earn the RAMP, but their collective efforts have helped to put the Berkeley County School District's School Counseling Program on the map at the state and national level.
